Sun protection and healthy architecture: our vision in “La Casa Sana”

Our homes influence how we rest, breathe and live our daily lives. With this in mind, the workshop “La Casa Sana, arquitectura que cuida” (The Healthy Home: Architecture that Cares), organised by MATCOAM, brought together professionals from the fields of architecture and design to discuss healthier, more efficient and more sustainable homes.

Housing is no longer seen merely as a built space. Increasingly, architects, specifiers and design professionals view it as a living environment, capable of influencing our health, rest, comfort and the way we live our daily lives.

It was with this in mind that the workshop “La Casa Sana: Architecture that Cares” was held, an event organised by MATCOAM that explored key criteria for designing healthier, more efficient and more sustainable homes.

Architecture that cares through design

During the event, a number of issues were raised that are often overlooked but which have a profound impact on the quality of life within a home: ventilation, exposure to toxic substances, radiation, the choice of materials, energy efficiency and the building’s orientation in relation to the sun.

The workshop featured Laura Ortín, founder and director of L’AURA ORTÍN Architecture for Happiness, and Nacho Gias, an architect specialising in green building and sustainable architecture. Both shared key insights on how to design homes that are more attuned to people, the environment and the actual habits of those who live in them.

Sun protection as part of the architectural brief

At Saxun, we took part in this event by sharing our perspective on sun protection as an essential part of architectural design.

Prescribing sun protection is not simply a matter of adding an awning, a blind, a louvre or a pergola at the end of the project. It involves understanding how the sun affects the home, the orientation of each space, at what times of day shade is needed, and when it is best to make the most of natural light.

In residential architecture, these decisions have a direct impact on day-to-day well-being. A room that is well protected from excessive sunlight can be more pleasant, more energy-efficient and easier to live in.

A shaded terrace becomes a true extension of the home. A façade with the right solutions improves its energy efficiency and provides privacy without compromising on natural light.

Light, comfort and well-being at Casa Sana

Natural light is one of the key assets of a home. It brings warmth, enhances the sense of space and connects the interior with the exterior. But, as with many design elements, it requires balance.

Systems such as awnings, louvres and shutters, pergolas, functional curtains and blinds allow you to adjust the balance between light, shade and comfort. Each solution addresses a specific need: protecting a façade, enhancing privacy, creating shade in an outdoor space, reducing heat gain, or adding flexibility to the use of a room.

For Saxun, this approach to sun protection is perfectly in line with our way of working: offering a wide range of solutions that help improve spaces so we can live better. Spaces that are more pleasant, better protected and better suited to everyday life.
